This is the continuation of the first book from Yoshihito Isogawa, building on the idea of seeding ingenious and creative contraptions in the hope it will inspire new builders to greater and more impressive creations. I will admit that when I read the first book I was both intrigued and baffled by the approach however it did not take me many pages to realize what the goal of the book was.

Rather than provide you with instructions on how to copy the designs thereby only really learning how to follow instructions which if anyone has how has build Lego kits knows its one of the first lessons you learn but rather to understand what the concept is and then to make it your "own".

For example the use of striking and often contrasting colours is intentional so you can see how it works without being made to repeat it blindly. What struck me most about all three volumes yes there is another one after this is that how quickly the complexity and creativity escalates.

It feels that the first page or two are pretty basic but then they suddenly escalate. If you do not believe me - read a section backwards.

The first few pages are almost impossible to follow and as you read further and further in to the chapter eventually you see what is going on. However read the chapter correctly and it feels a naturally smooth progression - which at points feels almost painfully slow.

The LEGO Technic Idea Book: Fantastic Contraptions

So as a lesson in thinking outside the box both figuratively and realistically this book is a great lesson in what there is still to learn about what you can achieve with Lego. Dec 26, Megan Kendall rated it it was amazing Shelves: My 10 yr old son loved this book.

Nov 24, Patrick rated it it was ok. Lego Technic is lame. Jun 20, Thomas rated it it was amazing Shelves: I have the whole set of these books and I think they are amazing this one is my favourite because it has more interesting models including pumps, springs, fans, motors and much more.

Well the challenge is that throughout the builds and designs the intention is to show how make something happen. Be it movement in a certain way, how to achieve a particular action or even just to think of things in a different orientation.

However there are no instructions on how to build them instead you are lead to that point through a series of iterations - you have to figure out how they did it The second thing I like is that they are basic - only showing what that "lesson" is - often with basic and highly colourful bricks - at a quick glance they look rather dated and poorly conceived when in actual fact i think its a very clever way of allowing you to figure out how they were built - rather like letting the audience seen the strings in a magic trick - you can see how they do it so you can try too but you are still impressed by their performance all the same.

There are several other books in this series and having grown up with Lego I am always interested in seeing how the truly creative Lego builders actually manage it Nov 27, Justin rated it liked it.

After building a few OK, a lot of Lego sets with my son, I've rediscovered my love for Lego and making custom builds. I've noticed that the more complex, mechanical Technic elements play a larger role in most Lego sets, so when I saw Yoshihito Isagawa's Lego Technic Idea Book - Simple Machines I decided to give it a shot in the hopes that I'd be able to incorporate some of its ideas into my own creations. Unfortunately, this book is entirely free of text.

I understand that Lego instructions are After building a few OK, a lot of Lego sets with my son, I've rediscovered my love for Lego and making custom builds. I understand that Lego instructions are also text free, but this guide doesn't read like a Lego instruction book. You can get a general idea of the building sequence and parts involved, but it's not always clear.

It's also not always evident just what the simple machine on each page is supposed to be used for. Perhaps more advanced Technic builders don't need that basic information, but as a novice and as a parent , I didn't find this book nearly as helpful as I had hoped.

If you're looking for something that will help younger builders, this probably isn't it.

Jan 26, Ariadna73 rated it really liked it Shelves: I like a lot of things of this book: This book is a powerful tool to help communicate with our kids; by making them expand their minds through creation.

Simplicity is the key; and I won't deny that it is tempting to try some of them with my own lego collection.

Jun 13, Nick Sweeting rated it really liked it. Rather short, but it contains many gearing layouts that I've never seen or thought of even after many years of playing with legos.
